Online Group Exhibition: A MOMENT

2nd – 30th September 2023

Willow Art Space is pleased to present A MOMENT, an online group exhibition curated by Zhimin Zhang, showcasing four international artists; Rachel Zhang, Sofia Pashaei, Thomas Mau, and Anaja Hvastija Gaia. The exhibition will be on view from 2nd to 30th September 2023.

We choose to remember, cherish and reflect on certain moments. Those moments help us construct our life story and contribute to our understanding of who we are and where we come from.

A Moment serves as a collective exploration of personal narratives, social complexities, and the human experience through the pursuit of capturing significant points in time—those fleeting yet profound instances that shape our identities and relationships.

We all have a moment, a story to tell.

Rachel Zhang: Rachel Zhang is an artist based in New York. Through an absurdist lens, Rachel Zhang’s artworks peel back the layers of existential anxieties, questioning the intricacies of personal autonomy and societal roles within the backdrop of a capitalist society. Her oil paintings, imbued with distortion and archetypal influences, mirror the interplay between conformity and rebellion. Drawing inspiration from historical echoes, Zhang provocatively explores themes of morality, judgment, and punishment. Her depictions of public spaces become metaphors for detached social relationships and power dynamics, inviting viewers to contemplate the delicate balance between rigidity and instability. Zhang’s surreal imagery reflects the ever-evolving human condition, immortalized in a fleeting moment frozen in time.

Sofia Pashaei: Sofia Pashaei is a painter, director, animator, and illustrator based in Sweden. Sofia Pashaei’s narrative paintings chronicle the evolution of relationships, capturing the ebb and flow of time through shifting architectural elements and atmospheric changes. Her work delves into the myriad identities within a person and their interplay with others. Pashaei’s seamless transition from one setting to another underscores the complexity of individual identity, culminating in a visual ode to the passage of time and the various personas that reside within us. Pashaei captures the essence of a single moment – a shared glance, an intimate conversation – and extends it into an encapsulation of time itself, inviting contemplation on the ephemerality of emotional bonds.

Thomas Mau: Thomas Mau is based in Denmark. Thomas Mau imbues his creations with themes drawn from literature and the inexorable journey toward mortality. With a religious touch, Mau employs symbols and narratives to explore universal emotions like melancholy, relief, and despair. His work, inspired by literary giants and artistic luminaries, seamlessly weaving together spirituality and existential introspection. A MOMENT is where Thomas Mau grapples with the inexorable passage of time and the fleeting nature of existence.

Anaja Hvastija Gaia: Anaja Hvastija Gaia is based in Slovenia. Anaja Hvastija Gaia’s works serve as a bridge between the tangible and intangible, a meeting point for the physical and psychological. The ethereal forms underscore the dualities within us – the real and the imagined, the ideal and the actual. A MOMENT comes to life as Gaia captures ephemeral instances of personal growth and introspection, inviting introspection into the delicate equilibrium of identity and self-discovery.
